AUTISM SWIM LAUNCH

We will soon be launching a new swimming course aimed specifically at young people with autism – which will be one of the first in the country.

Autism Swim teaches youngsters diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) how to be safe around water while increasing their swimming skills.

We have partnered with Fiona Marshall of Swimtime, who has been accredited and will run courses for Peak Empower after the Easter holidays.

Fiona said: “Swimming is a life skill and something that could save your child’s life as well as opening a doorway to other aquatic activities and experiences. It is also a great way to keep fit and have fun.

“Autism Swim is the most in-depth swimming course related to people with additional needs that I have ever completed. It really supports teachers who have not worked with young people with ASD before and gives you greater confidence in trying new things and ideas.

“I learned various ways to adapt lessons to meet the needs of specific children, as well as working on a task and reward system.

“I am extremely proud to have become accredited in Autism Swim. I have worked with many children with ASD in the past and understand the huge benefits swimming can bring – not just for safety but also as a sensory activity.”

As well as being accredited in Autism Swim, Fiona has completed her Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) level 2 certificate as well as other disability awareness swimming training sessions.

Saffy Tuckfield, chief executive of Peak Empower, added: “We always aim to be innovative and at the forefront of new movements supporting young people with additional needs. We are really excited to be able to launch Autism Swim alongside Fiona and are confident this will make a huge difference to those to take the course.

“We can’t wait to get started.”
